Ploubazlanec: its history
Ploubazlanec is a town in the north of the Côtes-d’Armor department. The commune of Ploubazlanec is bordered by the English Channel, on approximately 19 kilometers of coastline and extends over 15.04 km², or 1,504 hectares. It is located on the coast of Goëlo in the North-West of the bay of Saint-Brieuc and of the national natural reserve of the bay of Saint-Brieuc.
It is bordered by the Trieux, a small coastal river whose mouth is framed from upstream to downstream by Pleudaniel then Lézardrieux to the west, and Plourivo then Paimpol then Ploubazlanec to the east.
Ploubazlanec comes from the old Breton “ploe” (parish) and, it seems, from “banadl” (broom).
It was in 1224 that it was mentioned for the first time (Ploibanazlech) during a donation made to the Abbey of Beauport and it was designated as a parish in 1232. The villages of Lannévez and Perros-Hamon , later annexed by Ploubazlanec, were with Bréhat an enclave of the diocese of Dol.
In the 19th century, economic activity focused on fishing, especially in Iceland from the Second Empire. During the first half of the 20th century, brought by the biologist Louis Lapicque and the historian Charles Seignobos, the town became the holiday resort for many scientists: Les Curie (Pierre and Marie Curie, then Frédéric and Irène Joliot-Curie) , the Perrins, the Langevins, Marcel Cachin, or the founder of L’Oréal, Eugène Schueller.
The commune of Ploubazlanec is part of the canton of Paimpol and depends on the district of St-Brieuc.
